Our approach blends familiar architectural details with contemporary updates. We highlight your home's existing architectural features and add contemporary design ideas and finishes that create uniquely fresh and sophisticated spaces. |
Hello Old, Meet New Familiar architectural details, period trim, deep baseboards, stucco walls sit side by side with modern furniture, whimsical tile, and fresh prints and patterns. We don't design period museum, and we don't design modern glass boxes either. Instead, we search for and arresting blend of antecedent and precedent.
Our design approach recognizes the uniqueness of each site, each home, and each family. We rigorously pursue a site and building-specific solution tailored to the needs of your family.
It's more of a design perspective than a strict adherence to a particular style, as the result can be very different for each project. But in the end, we design special places that are uniquely suited to you.

Spatial Adjacency Sometimes the unexpected pairing is spatial. A sitting area off of the kitchen? This project features an uncommon blend of a relaxing space near a hard-working kitchen. It was a desire of the homeowner for a place for guests to gather comfortably while dinner is whipped up.
Question Everything
For us, the design process always starts with questions, questions, and then more questions.
With every new project, we familiarize ourselves with the family, listen to their story. What has led them to contact us? What are their plans and dreams for the project? What frustrations or exciting opportunities drive the project?
House projects are the byproducts of our family's needs, aspirations, and frustrations and, as such, are not only reflections of who we are, but what we want to become.
For better or for worse, we are intimately linked to our homes. It is our priority and privilege to understand the story behind every project we do.
Before we pursue any design direction, we

Hello Variety Yes, we designed both of these bathrooms! Our design approach is not proscriptive or rigid. It's responsive and reflective of the unique properties of the property and the homeowner all rolled up with a bit of inspiration.

Are You With Us? And sometimes when the space and place is right, we dive in and make a splash. We are not afraid to select bold colors and strong patterns - they are game changers. If you're willing, we're able.

At your service
As a small business dependant on word of mouth referrals, we are keenly aware of the power of a positive customer experience, and we have structured our project management and communication with the homeowner in mind.

We are honored to be a 5X recipient of Houzz Customer Service Award, a designation more important to us than any design award. To get a better sense of what it is like working with us, check out reviews on any one of the following platforms.

We have identified every customer touch point during the sales, design, and construction process in an attempt to address and anticipate the pinch points and stressors common to most projects. Throughout the process we identify the roles and responsibilities, deliverables, and next steps of each phase of the design and construction process.
Knowing what to expect and when to expect it dramatically reduces stress, and we commonly have people who were initially apprehensive about the design process in the end say it was not only easier than they thought, but enjoyable, too.

Drawing Conclusions
For us the design process goes back to a simple, time-honored method - drawing.
The act of drawing is unique in its ability to discover and develop design options quickly. Eye, mind, and hand are far more fluid and responsive than computers; drawing demands engagement with your subject and a quick response to a host of design possibilities.
Drawing allows for discovery and possibility.

Soup To Nuts It's an odd phrase, but it fits how we prefer to partner with homeowners on their projects, working with them from start to finish. That means, obviously, designing a beautiful project uniquely suited for you, but also working with you on interior selections as well, like tile, countertops, plumbing fixtures, and lighting. And then finishing it off leading the builder selection process and serving as your representative during construction.
During design review meetings, often initial layouts are presented in sketch form. Sketches communicates design intent effectively and also convey that the layouts are still preliminary and open for modification.
Computers are great tools, but in the design process, we find that they are best at displaying and documenting what is known.

When I was in graduate school at the University of Minnesota, I was uniquely focused on the role and process of drawing as a way to find ideas, not simply as a means to record what you already know.
take the drawing method seriously and have for decades. It was the focus of my architectural education (and in my earlier career as a graphic designer) and is the bedrock of how I work and think.
