The StoryOriginally built in 1934 as a modest, out-of-the-city Cape Cod retreat, this single-story house had tons of character and charm.
But like many homes of this era in southwest Minneapolis, rooms were small and the floor plan was broken up, with the dining room isolated in a shoe-box shaped 50's era addition and the small kitchen isolated at the back of the house. The young family living in the home was growing and the original house layout was not quite working for them. |
Homeowner Reviews
We really enjoyed working with David over the course of our kitchen and house remodel. He was always available to answer any questions we had during the process and he worked really well with our builder. We appreciated his ability to listen and interpret our ideas for the space and how he created a plan that fit our lifestyle of living.
We are really, really happy with the finished product and have already recommended him to friends that are starting remodeling projects of their own.

The Project
DESCRIPTION Single-story rear addition, 14'x21'
In concept, it was an open great room, but at a much simpler scale. In keeping with the scale of the house, the new kitchen is efficient and with every inch put to use.
A single wall serves and the backdrop for a run of cabinets and appliances. Glass front upper cabinets supported by custom wood brackets keep the space light and charming. A paneled refrigerator blends into the cabinets, creating a seamless layout that belies its modest scale.

ISLAND VACATION Nothing beats a big island, for sunbathing, or for cooking. Even with a modest footprint, we were able to get a ton of countertop and storage into a kitchen that had only one wall upon which to load cabinets and countertops.
But where the kitchen really shines is at the island.
A large, double-loaded island is the hard-working hub of the kitchen and the adjacent dining and family rooms. It seats four with ample storage and houses the microwave, dishwasher, and sink. The food-focused owners are able to prep and cook meals, almost as if on stage, remaining connected with family and guests.
Light It Up!
A prime design parameter was light, lots of light. Lovingly dubbed the "Shiny Box" by the homeowners, as the space is drenched with early and afternoon sun.
Rich hardwood floors soak up the sun's rays and add luster and shine to the space. New French doors connect the house to the recently landscaped backyard, making this space complete, both inside and out.
